The Tempest (this week)
Be not afeared; Although the isle is full of noises, they are sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not…
Mount Lawley Senior High School's Year 11 Drama students are crawling, creeping and climbing onto stage to revamp a Shakespearean classic.
A Zen Zen Zo adaptation of William Shakespeare's fantasy comedy, 'The Tempest' is a physical theatre rendition of the play that will be performed at the Tricycle Theatre on the 15th, 16th, and 17th of September (Term 3, Week 9, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday).
When Prospero (Shaun), the exiled duke of Milan, creates a vicious magical storm, with the help of his air spirit Ariel (Lily) and her chorus (Peri, Belle, Elise and Alison), he wrecks a noble vessel on his shores, coincidently containing the men who betrayed him, Alonso King of Naples (Ayeesha), and Prospero's traitorous brother Antonio (Mandu), the false duke of Milan.
With them are Alonso's brother Sebastian (Jamie), his noble friend Gonzalo (Ben), Alonso's beloved son, Ferdinand (McLane), and their troop of clowns (Syifaa, Bridget and Nina).
What ensures in general chaos, with Prospero's daughter Miranda (Maya) quickly falling for the lost Ferdinand, Sebastian and Antonio reveal their plot to kill Alonso and take his kingdom and the wandering clowns run into the twisted monster Caliban (Fraser, Tim, Cameron, Szilvia and Raegan) and create their own plan to end Prospero's life.
The Tempest is a play that anyone can enjoy-gritty fight scenes for lovers of action, biting Shakespearian humour, singing and dancing, a delightful love story that would touch any heart and beautifully intricate characters that will stay in your mind for a lifetime.
