Cadets @ Leaning Tree Camp
Congratulations to the 60 Cadets who braved the cold weather and completed some wonderful work in the forests near Pemberton during their Term 2 Camp.
The Cadets worked with the local Department of Parks & Wildlife Rangers, as well as the staff from the Pemberton Camp School and Pemberton Discovery Tours on a series of community service projects.
We cleaned up and maintained several tracks in the Pemberton Mountain Bike Park, as well as a lengthy section of the Munda Biddi Trail near the Gloucester Tree.
The Cadets also cleaned up some campgrounds near the Warren River as well as the 4WD track that passes through the extensive Yeagarup Dune system.
Along the way, we learnt about the environmental pressures DPaW face in the region and had a session with the region's Chief Fire Officer on how they fought the massive Northcliffe Fire earlier this year (the biggest fire ever fought in WA).
The Cadets were able to have a go on the mountain bike trails, and travel the 4WD tracks to the magnificent beaches along the south coast ... with only a few struggles back up the sandy hills.
The trip would not be possible without our Instructors, Andrew the Chaplain, Mr Armstrong, Mr Fletcher, Mr Dubois, Mr Lee and Ms Bell.
Our great thanks to Mark and the staff from Pemberton Camp School, and to Pemberton Discovery Tours.
Our extra special thanks to Ranger Jeff Kimpton, Senior Ranger in the Donnelly District, for his amazing hospitality and organisation.
We had a great time, had some amazing experiences and can see a very real partnership developing between our Cadet Unit and the Donnelly District over the next few years.
Our next project ... possibly a planting project in 2016 to support the effort to promote recovery after the Northcliffe Fire.
