Mr Howard is Crossing America By Bike!
Our beloved Head of Health & Physical Education, Mark Howard, is on leave this term, and in true Phys Ed style is taking time out for physical activity.
With a group of friends, he is riding from west to east across the United States raising money for Wheelchairs for Kids.
After dipping his bike in the Pacific Ocean, Mark's journey is taking him about 6,700km along the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail from Florence, Oregon to Yorktown Virginia.
The 10 week journey will take him over the Rocky Mountains, through 10 states and over the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean and average over 120km per day.
"We are doing the ride to celebrate health, fitness and being positive to life's challenges."
The riders are also raising money and awareness for their charity, Wheelchairs for Kids.
Each wheelchair, made in Bangarra, costs $150, and by he time they began the ride, the group had already raised over $8,000 - they are now over $23,000.
We hope you enjoy the venture Mr. Howard, and thanks for your inspiring efforts.
You can follow the group's TransAmerica Cycle Challenge Blog, or donate to their Wheelchairs for Kids fund.
Message of Support from The Hon Julie Bishop MP, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Party, Federal Member for Curtin.
"It gives me great pleasure to contribute to your blog with a message of support. While I may be a keen runner, the Prime Minister is better known as the keen cyclist, so he may regret more than me that we cannot be part of your challenge of cycling across the USA to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. I wish you all the best, and hope the weather and hospitality of America makes for an enjoyable experience."
