'Issues Associated with Miscarriages of Justice' talk by John Button
On the 13th of the May, Gabby, Sophia, and Lulu from the year 11 Politics and Law class went to see a presentation by Mr. John Button, for the Politics and Law Educators Association of Western Australia on his experiences related to a miscarriage of justice in the Western Australian legal system in the 1960's.
Mr Button was falsely accused and convicted of wilful murder of his girlfriend, Rosemary Anderson.
He described his experience with the legal system as unfair, brutal, and incomprehensible by modern standards.
Despite this, he was still able to give the students an enlightening and moving speech.
His outlook on the legal system and life after this ordeal is commendable and truly inspiring.
Afterwards, the girls got to talk to him and he was just as genuine and warm-hearted as he was perceived to be during his talk.
He was just an ordinary 19 year old who happened to fall victim to the apparent inequities and contradictions of the Western Australian legal system of the 1960's.
