Visiting Ancient Egyptologist Speaks to History Students
For the second time this year Perth has been visited by a renowned Egyptologist.
Dr Yann Tristant, formally of the Sorbonne and Louvre in Paris, and now resident lecturer of Egyptian studies at Macquarie University, NSW, visited the WA Museum as a guest speaker.
Our students were lucky to be invited to a private lecture at MLC outlining the importance of Dr Tristan's work on the pre dynastic period of Egypt.
His extensive work with volunteer students of archaeology and Ancient Egypt history, has led to many new understandings and discoveries regarding village burials and the extensive use of mastabas, before the building and use of pyramids - over 5,000 years ago.
In 2015, a Bachelor of Archaelogy course begins at Macquarie University under the guidance of Dr Tristant.
He was able to talk to prospective students and their passion for archaeology and Egyptology.
His passion for the study and science was infectious and had the students enthralled in his descriptions of his work, while outlining at the same time that the encroachment of cities and gorging populations overtakes important archaelogical sites.
Hence there is a need for speedy, thorough and painstakingly careful work to investigate, document and recover as much as possible.
It is a slow, often uncomfortable, sometimes dangerous and always costly occupation.
