Picture Books

What are picture books?

Picture books are usually our first experience with the magic of stories. They are simply books where the text and pictures work together to tell a story and both are just as important as each other.

The rainbow fish is a good example of how important the pictures are to the story.

Although the language is often simple and easy to understand, the themes and ideas are often complex. For example, Cry heart, but never break provides an opportunity for children to explore the issue of death.

Although they are generally aimed at children, some picture books appeal to adults. Although a young girl is the main character in Shaun Tan's The red tree, the story looks at the impact of depression.
