The Peter Sparbier Perpetual Mathematics Scholarship 2024

 

Peter Sparbier was a respected Mathematics Teacher at Mount Lawley Senior High School in the 1990s. Peter was passionate about mathematics and mathematics education. He passed away in January 2007 and in his estate, he bequeathed a sum of money to establish a perpetual scholarship for a Year 11 student to pursue his/her studies of mathematics to the highest levels.

The Scholarship is presented annually to an eligible Year 10 student for mathematics studies in Year 11 and 12.

 

Scholarship Value $2000

The Peter Sparbier Scholarship provides a prize up to the value of $2000 to a Year 11 student undertaking mathematics studies in Year 11 and 12.

The prize comprises:

• An iPad or Notebook up to the value of $2000 or $500 toward the charges associated with the student's studies in Year 11 and Year 12.

The Scholarship is awarded to a Year 10 student in Term 4 prior to the commencement of studies in Year 11 the following year. The iPad or Notebook is provided or the monies are payable at the commencement of the year in which Year 11 studies commence.

 

Eligibility

To be eligible for the Scholarship applicants must:

• Study Mathematical Methods and Mathematical Specialist In Years 11 and 12.
• Undertake at least FIVE WACE subjects or equivalents, in Year 12.
• Possess a demonstrated outstanding mathematical ability.
• A demonstrated passion for mathematics.

Note: Failure to comply with these conditions may result in the withdrawal of the Scholarship.

The school reserves the right not to award the scholarship to the highest ranked candidate if that student has already won a scholarship.

 

Selection Process

The Scholarship will be advertised to the school and wider population.

 

The selection process will be based upon:

• Academic Merit in mathematics (transcripts of previous reports and mathematics achievement is required);
• Evidence of participation in external mathematics competitions (e.g. Have Sum Fun, Australian Mathematics Competition, etc.);
• The name and contact details of a Teacher or Principal who can act as your Referee, testifying to the applicant’s mathematical abilities; and
• A supporting statement (maximum one typed A4 page) from the applicant demonstrating his/her dedication to the study of mathematics to the highest levels.
