Special Programs - Vocational Education and Training (VET)

These courses develop skills through accredited competencies with a focus on a particular vocational and/or industry area. Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is a highly recommended feature of all courses.

Any student may select SWL to provide an opportunity to simultaneously gain recognition for an accredited subject and experience in the workplace.

Any VET course that commences in Year 11 is designed to continue to Year 12, if viable numbers are retained. Successful completion of both Year 11 and 12 will provide a student with graduation and a TAFE/Industry recognised Certificate II/Certificate III in the relevant area. Opportunities for School Based Traineeships (combining school studies with paid employment and training) will be a priority focus for Mount Lawley Senior High School. For Year 11, 2005 the following VET course was offered:

Certificate II in Business, Technology and Tourism (TAFE)

This Vocational Course is designed as a two year course for Year 11 and 12 students in Business, Technology and Tourism. Students will gain skills, theory and the practical experience needed to obtain the desired career outcomes in:

Tourism and Hospitality - hotel/travel
Business - Secretarial/Office Clerk
Bookkeeping to Trial Balance
Small Business
Customer Service

Students will complete a two year course including Secondary Graduation AND a vocational training course which will lead to nationally recognized training qualifications at CERTIFICATE II LEVEL. Students will then be eligible to enter the world of work or continue to TAFE.

Structured Workplace Learning Program which is an integral part of this course will place students in the workplace one day per week.

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL)

Structured Workplace Learning (SWL) is on-the-job placement for school students. It enables students to acquire skills and knowledge in an industry setting. A structured work placement differs from work experience in the following ways:

Students complete specific tasks in order to demonstrate or reinforce a variety of workplace skills
A workplace trainer/supervisor is assigned to train the students
A logbook is used to record the student’s progress. Students are responsible for their own learning/progress and record tasks and skills covered each placement day
SWL is a Curriculum Council subject which contributes to each student’s WA Certificate of Education and Secondary Graduation
Students are allocated a work placement of one day a week (120 minimum hours per year) in Year 11 and 110 minimum hours per year in Year 12, in the career of their choice. They may be able to select up to four different areas over two years
During the placement period, students are provided with opportunities to repeat tasks
There are three/four hours during the week which enable the students to catch up work missed during the work placement day
