Special Programs - Languages

Mount Lawley Senior High School is A Department of Education specialist high school offering special placement in Languages as follows.

Chinese
French
German
Italian
Indonesian

Up to 32 students are selected after undergoing tests to form the Special Language Class. Special Language students study two languages over three years and continue with one or two languages to Year 12.

A Leader in Language Learning

Our extensive and well established programme offering five languages - Chinese, French, German, Indonesian and Italian. puts us at the forefront of language instruction whether viewed from a national or international perspective. Other than our Special Language students who study two languages - all students study a LOTE in Years 8, 9 and 10 - the majority choosing to continue the language studied in primary school. A Beginner LOTE in Year 10 caters for new students.

Stimulating, Interesting and Challenging Programmes

A variety of methodology is adopted to teach our students. Texts are colourful and attractive highlighting themes and material to be learned. Audio and visual programmes, CDs, DVDs, computer software, films, magazines, posters, cultural literature, food tasting, and restaurant outings enable the LOTE student to experience a rewarding learning journey which focuses on speaking, comprehension and writing.

Exciting and Rewarding Exchange Trips

Over many years students have had the opportunity to travel to China , France , Reunion , Germany , Malaysia and Italy as part of a tour group or individually as scholarship winners. Their experiences have enabled them to improve their linguistic ability; gain cultural insights as well as make lifelong friendships. Mount Lawley Senior High School has a sister school relationship with No 14 Middle School in Hangzhou , China and students and teachers regularly exchange cultural visits.

Academic Excellence in LOTE

Over many years our students have demonstrated high standards of proficiency in LOTE by winning Subject Exhibitions and Certificate of Distinctions in the Tertiary Entrance Examinations. Others have excelled in the privately organized language examinations held by Chinese, French, German and Italian associations. Furthermore a significant number have won Department of Education scholarships enabling them to travel overseas to further their linguistic skills. Many of our students have pursued their LOTE studies at WA Universities and overseas Universities.

Communication and Culture

The aim of our LOTE programme is to give students a varied, enjoyable programme which provides them with every opportunity to develop linguistic skills as well as gain an appreciation and understanding of the culture whose language they are learning.
