TAFE Entrance Requirements

All students should consider Technical and Further Education (TAFE) for when they graduate from school.

TAFE: Implications for Upper School Subject Selection and Performance

  • Academic Performance - An 'A' grade is worth 5 points, a 'B' grade 3 points and a 'C' grade, 2 points.
  • Preferred Subjects. Nearly all TAFE courses have a list of preferred subjects listed in the selection criteria. Subjects will contribute 1 or 2 points, provided the student has achieved a 'C' grade or better.
  • Points are awarded for relevant work experience, and Structured Workplace Learning.
  • An interview and/or portfolio may be required for some courses.

Where there are more applicants for a TAFE course than places available, which is usually the case, TAFE selects applicants by ranking them using a scoring system. TAFE scores are calculated as per information in Selection Criteria Handbook.

If students know what careers they are aiming for, they are wise to look up appropriate TAFE courses in the TAFE Handbook, go online to www.tafe.wa.gov.au, or enquire at the TAFE reception or phone 1800 999 167 (free call). This way they can examine the selection criteria of suitable courses, including minimum entrance requirements and preferred year 11 and year 12 subjects.
